Rent high-fashion evening dresses from Rent the Runway

Rent the Runway

Don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a dress that you might only wear once or twice? Now you can wear styles straight off the runway, save loads of money and be green. Rent the Runway allows you to rent designer dresses from over 50 high-fashion designers for a 4 day stretch (or for an extra fee, 8 days).

From summer weddings and garden parties to cocktail parties to girl's night out, they have loads of designer dresses and matching accessories. And the best part is, you can wear the new Proenza Schouler or Vena Cava cocktail dress to your next special event for as little as $50. You can reserve your designer dress and accessories up to 6 months in advance, and they will even send you a second size for free, just to be safe.

Using Rent the Runway is easy - Just find a dress you love, select your sizes, select when you’d like it delivered, and it’ll appear on your doorstep. When you're done, you mail it back in a pre-paid envelope and they take care of the dry cleaning at an eco-friendly cleaner.

UPDATE 2015: Rent The Runway is now offering an Unlimited Subscription that works sort of like Netflix. For a monthly fee - you add items to your queue, they send you 3 items that you can keep as long as you want, and when you are done with a piece you mail it back and they send the next item in your queue (shipping is free and they take care of the dry cleaning). Unlimited Subscription is a beta program so you need to get in line - join the waitlist.

Ecoist Mega Silver in Sex and the City 2

This metallic, oversized tote by ecoist, recently made it's film debut in Sex and the City 2 as Samantha's companion. “We chose the Ecoist Silver Mega because the proportion is perfect, it went great with her look…it’s got a very glamorous look...” said Danny Santiago, Sex and the City Stylist.

It's amazing that something so stylish can be created from materials that would otherwise be sent to a landfill. Ecoist handbags, including the Mega Silver, are handcrafted from upcycled candy wrappers. Not only has Ecoist has saved over 15 million wrappers from being sent to the landfill, but they also plant a tree for each bag sold. And for a limited time, you can get $30 Off the Mega Silver + Free shipping when you use the code ECOSEXY at checkout!

I thought it might be useful to post periodically, introducing the newest additions to ecomodish's listings of natural and green companies. This week's new additions are listed below. Please take a minute to check out them out and if you're familiar their products, leave a review and tell others about them!

What's in your perfume? The Not So Sexy truth

June 03, 2010 | posted by ecomodish | 0 Comments

Ever wonder what a "fragrance" is comprised of? As consumers, most of us trust that the products we buy contain safe ingredients. Why wouldn't they? But fragrance is considered a trade secret, which means your perfume could contain a blend of any number of 3,100 chemical ingredients used by the fragrance industry, AND the maker doesn't have to list any of them on their product label. So, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and Environmental Working Group joined forces to find out what secret ingredients are hiding in a variety of popular fragrances - and you don't want to miss these results.

Not So Sexy Fragrances

Independent Testing of Popular Fragrances

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics commissioned independent tests, and partnered with the Environmental Working Group to analyze the data and product labels, of 17 popular fragrance products. Among the tested fragrances were celebrity scents Jennifer Lopez J. Lo Glow, Britney Spears Curious, Halle by Halle Berry, and Hannah Montana Secret Celebrity.

What They Found

The analysis revealed that nearly half of the ingredients in the products tested were not listed individually on labels, due to the trade secrets loophole. These ingredients are allowed to hide under the vague ingredient "fragrance".

Among these are chemicals associated with hormone disruption, allergic reactions, and a propensity to accumulate in human tissues and even be passed on to newborn babies.

And, the analysis revealed that these products contained, on average:

  • 14 hidden chemicals not listed on labels due to a loophole in federal law that allows companies to claim fragrances as trade secrets.
  • 10 sensitizing chemicals associated with allergic reactions such as asthma, wheezing, headaches and contact dermatitis.
  • 4 hormone-disrupting chemicals linked to a range of health effects including sperm damage, thyroid disruption and cancer.

The Good News

There are companies out there that are committed to being open about their product ingredients and are dedicated to crafting safe, natural fragrances without all these harmful chemicals, including:

Pacifica - free of Parabens, Sulfates, Propylene Glycol, Phthalates, GMOs, Triclosan and Petro-chemicals. All are cruelty-free and 100% vegan. Shop Pacifica

ACORELLE - free of Phthalates, Petro-chemicals, Musks and other contaminants such as pesticides, chemical fertilizers and synthetic molecules. Shop ACORELLE

Lavanila - free of Parabens, Sulfates, Propylene Glycol, Phthalates, PEGs, Synthetic Fragrances and Petro-chemicals. Shop Lavanila

TSI-LA - free of Parabens, Sulfates, Propylene Glycol, Phthalates, GMOs, Petrochemicals, Dioxins and Synthetic Fragrances. Shop Tsi-La

How You Can Help

You don't have to settle for not knowing what harmful chemicals might be hidden in your fragrances. Environmentally and socially conscious jewelry

The Andean Collection's core principles of social and environmental responsibility are a refreshing addition to the fashion industry which largely relies on inexpensive factory labor and synthetic materials. Each jewelry design is handcrafted by Andean Collection artisans using beautiful, natural beads made from seeds that have been sustainably harvested from rainforests and lowlands in South America. The Andean Collection jewelry not only helps support the indigenous communities but also the preservation of their forests.

Andean Collection Acai Necklace

The Andean Collection's jewelry is comprised of funky and bold designs inspired by the indigenous jewelery of Ecuador. With pieces designed for layering, the wearer can creatively fashion a unique style all their own. The rich colors and natural seeds and nuts, make striking one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art. Some of my favorite pieces from their new Spring 2010 collection are the Layered Chain Necklace and the Tagua Bibb Necklace, shown below.

Andean Collection Layered Chain Necklace Andean Collection Tagua Bibb Necklace

The Andean Collection was founded by Amanda Judge while she was in Ecuador researching her masters' thesis – with a topic of "rural women's survival strategies in the face of extreme poverty" and a focus on ideas for how outside agencies could help. Instead of just writing about it, she decided it would be more beneficial to become an outlet for helping the community improve their standard of living. Following fair trade principles is only part of The Andean Collection's dedication to providing their artisans a better life, they also share the profits as partial owners. The video below provides a moving and uplifting look into the lives of The Andean Collection's artisans and their community.

For inspiring stories and news about the artisans, the materials and the design process visit The Andean Collection blog.

UPDATE: The Andean Collection is now called Faire Collection.

Eco Dining: reclaimed wood dining table & eco accessories

I usually lean towards modern, contemporary furniture and design, but lately I've been drawn to the rustic meets industrial design style...so I thought I would share this eco dining room's earthy tablescape. I've been admiring the reclaimed wood dining table for a while, imagining it as the centerpiece to my dining room. And the mix of industrial and natural dining accessories, used in this dining room design, complement it perfectly.

CB2 Eco Dining Room

The darjeeling dining table is constructed from reclaimed Indian railroad ties that have been pieced into a mosaic plank dining top and supported by industrial metal legs. The dining table and all accessories are available at CB2.com.

CB2 Eco Dining Accessories

{a} Reed chair - Antiqued iron wires are handwoven and welded to create this seat. Sits on sleigh legs.
{b} Carson wine glass - This handblown wine glass is designed to enhance color and aroma.
{c} Gear candleholder - Reclaimed iron gears make up each industrial tealight candle holder.
{d} Duo linen placemat for two - 100% linen placemat that spans opposite sides of the table.
{e} FLOR™ High Tide™ rug tiles - FLOR, build-your-own rug tile system, made from recyclable materials.

What's your favorite design style?
