Amazon Kindle: Paperless, Portable Library

Amazon Kindle

I know there are many book enthusiasts out there that are hesitant about using an electronic paper reading device, such as the Amazon Kindle, instead of curling up to the classic paper-bound books that are so familiar and even comforting for many of us. But the Kindle can make a great, green alternative to paper books, magazines and newspapers - if you can keep an open mind to it. I was hesitant at first too - but the flexibility, convenience and customizable features make it easy to warm up to.

How it works: The electronic-ink screen uses ink, just like books and newspapers, but displays the ink particles electronically. The screen reflects light providing the readability of printed paper - there is virtually no glare and there is no back-light needed. So, unlike computer screens and other electronic devices, the Kindle can be read outside as well as inside.

On-Demand: You can browse, purchase and start reading your next book in just a few minutes. Choose from over 285,000 books and you can even sample the first chapter for free. Books and periodicals are delivered in under 60 seconds via Amazon's optimized technology, Whispernet, over Sprint's 3G high-speed data network. There is no wireless fee or setup - and, unlike WiFi, you never have to hunt for a hotspot.

Features: It has six adjustable font sizes, so whether your prefer a larger font or your eyes are tired you can set a larger font with the click of a button. You can highlight passages and bookmark pages; as well as add, edit, delete, and export annotations. It includes The New Oxford American Dictionary in case you come across a word you don't know. And each Kindle has a unique and customizable e-mail address that allows you and your approved contacts to e-mail personal document files and pictures to your Kindle for a small fee.

Power: You can read on a single charge for up to 4 days with the wireless on, and up to 2 weeks with the wireless off. The Kindle charges fully in about 4 hours.

Portable Library: The Kindle 2 weighs only 10.2 ounces and holds more than 1,500 books. A copy of every book you purchase is backed up online at, including your last page read and any annotations you made; so you can make room for new titles, or download any title from your collection to reread whenever you want.

Experimental Features: Text-to-speech - Kindle can read newspapers, magazines, blogs and books out loud to you, unless the book is disabled by the rights holder. Basic Web browser - works well for simple, text-centric web sites such as Google and Wikipedia. PDF Document Conversion - you can email PDF documents to your Kindle, just like other personal documents. MP3 files - transfer MP3 files to play as background music while you read. Amazon is looking for user feedback on these features, as they are not perfected yet.

Why its green: Dramatically reduces the amount of power, transportation emissions and paper consumed for each book you purchase.

If you want to try before you buy, you can see a Kindle in person in a city near you by connecting with current Kindle owners.

Help Ecomodish Plant Trees in the Atlantic Forest

The Atlantic Forest in Brazil is considered one of the world's most endangered tropical forests, with only 7% of its original area remaining. Tropical forests play a special role in the global climate change fight. By planting 1 tree in the tropics, about 1 ton of CO2 will be taken out of the atmosphere over the course of the tree’s life. The Plant a Billion Trees in The Atlantic Forest reforestation effort will remove 10 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year. That's equivalent to taking 2 million cars off the road.

Please help Ecomodish reach our initial goal of planting 1,000 trees in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil this year. You can work your way towards planting trees by becoming active on and earning ecoPoints. For every 100 ecoPoints you earn, Ecomodish will plant one tree through the The Nature Conservancy's Plant a Billion Trees program.

Locally Grown: Farmers Markets Near You

Farmer's Markets Near You

Farmers Market popularity increases every year, which is good news because not only do they benefit the farmers but also the communities in which they operate. Farmers Markets give the consumer access to fresh, local produce and the opportunity to establish relationships with the farmers who grow it. They are not limited to just produce though. Depending on the size and location of the market; you may also find local honey, eggs, dairy, meat, flowers and more. And with minimal transportation and the opportunity to support sustainable local businesses, you can reduce your carbon footprint while boosting your community's economy.

If you live in a warmer climate, you are probably lucky enough to have access to year-round farmers markets. If not, you will most likely have seasonal markets that run from around June to October. Most markets are cash only, but some do accept payment in the form of credit/debit cards, SFMNP vouchers or even WIC vouchers. Locally grown produce is not only green, but it tastes better and is more nutritious - so don't miss out. Find a Farmers Market near you
