100Percent Pure Shampoo and Conditioner

When I first decided to stop using conventional beauty products, around 8 years ago, two of the products that were most difficult for me to find natural replacements for were shampoo and conditioner. I visited my local health food store thinking that they must have safe alternatives. But after reading the ingredient labels on pretty much all their shampoos and conditioners, reviewing the products on the skin deep database, keeping the price in mind, and knowing what my hair needs; there were only a few that I was willing to try. I tried a few different brands and types, even some that didn't meet the safety level I was looking for, and was disappointed by all of them. So I turned to DIY shampoos and conditioners, thinking at least I would be in charge of the ingredients. I tried different concoctions with baking soda, honey and apple cider vinegar and many recipes for castille soap shampoos with vinegar rinses - none of them worked for me for any period of time. My scalp got really dry and my hair always seemed stringy and heavy. (I should note that we have really hard water, and I have read that it can negatively impact how castille soap based shampoos work.)

For my hair, shampoo and conditioner has always been hard to find because I have fine, but very thick hair which can look oily and weighted down straight after washing with certain products. I also wash my hair about twice a week, so being able to go a few days in between washing without my hair looking oily is a requirement. I'm very picky about shampoos in particular, because my hair can tangle into crazy knots very easily when I wash it. I need a shampoo that will clean well, but not turn my hair into a knot ball before I apply the conditioner. And I need a conditioner that will moisturize, but not leave my hair heavy, stringy and greasy looking by the end of the day. I have honestly been searching for what-seems-like-forever, and only have only found a few that could make the cut.

100Percent Pure Shampoo and Conditioner

After trying shampoo and conditioner from Desert Essence, Nature's Gate, Giovanni, JASON, Avalon Organics, Earth Science and a many more - the first shampoo and conditioner that I switched to was by ShiKai, which left my hair feeling pretty good but I wasn't satisfied with the level of ingredients. Still, I used it for a while because I had not found any that worked better for me. The next shampoo and conditioner that I switched to for quite a while was Beautiful Curls, which met my ingredient qualification and left my hair feeling pretty clean, but started to look oily by the end of the second day. And I could never quite get used to the lack of suds when using the shampoo, so I continued to look for something more. About a year later, I started using Acure shampoos and conditioners, which met my ingredient qualification, the shampoo has just enough suds and doesn't leave my hair super tangled, and my hair felt and looked pretty good in between washing. I have been using them ever since...until I tried the new 100% Pure Shampoo and Conditioner line.

100Percent Pure Shampoo and Conditioner

100% Pure offers a great collection of moisturizers, cleansers, makeup and hair care products all made from healthy ingredients and refreshingly no chemicals or synthetics. I have tried many of their products from moisturizers to makeup, and keep coming back for more. I enjoy reading over the labels with the line-up of ingredients of extracts, oils and hydrosols from fruits, flowers, coffee, tea, kelp, aloe and not much else. The makeup is even colored using fruit, and everything smells seriously delicious.

Their collection has grown a lot since I started ordering from them over 6 years ago. I believe at that time it included only one shampoo and conditioner. I received samples of the old shampoo and conditioner with one of my orders, and honestly I didn't care for them. The shampoo had a consistency similar to water which was very difficult to work into my hair and it left it feeling heavy, although it smelled great. Even though I didn't care for that shampoo and conditioner, I love their other products so I was excited to see their new line-up of shampoo and conditioners all of which have great reviews. I decided to give some a try, and chose the Yuzu & Pomelo Glossing Shampoo (because I am drawn to fruity/citrus scents) and the Burdock & Neem Healthy Scalp Conditioner (because my scalp has been pretty dry this winter).

First, my order shipped a half hour after it was placed - awesome.
Next, it arrived at my house 2 days later - double awesome.
And it included a handful of small samples of lotions and cleansers - triple awesome.
(Every order I have received from them has contained 3-4 samples in it.)

100Percent Pure Shampoo and Conditioner

I have been using the Yuzu & Pomelo Shampoo and Burdock & Neem Conditioner for about a month now, and I'm happy to say that they are great. I really like the fresh, citrus scent of the Yuzu & Pomelo Shampoo. The consistency is on the thin side but not problematic, it has just enough suds, and my hair feels really clean afterwards. The Burdock & Neem Conditioner has a pleasant minty scent, a small amount can be worked throughout all my hair and it's not too greasy. Overall, my hair and scalp feel clean and moisturized and my hair dries with minimal frizz (I always air dry).

My husband has also been enjoying the Yuzu & Pomelo Shampoo - he has psoriasis on his scalp and many shampoos cause it to get worse, so this is a big deal. He's tried all kinds of psoriasis shampoos from prescription to tar based, some of which worked ok, but of course we were concerned about the ingredients. Since we started trading out chemical laden personal care products for more natural options, the shampoos that have kept his psoriasis in check have been this diy natural shampoo recipe from Wellness Mama which he loves, and the 100% Pure Yuzu & Pomelo Shampoo.

Jess' Bee Natural Lip Balm & Shea Butter Lotion

Jess' Be Natural Lip Balm and Lotion

I recently received some complimentary samples from Jess' Bee Natural, and started on my mission to test them out. I received 3 flavors of Natural Lip Balm and a sample of Shea Butter Lotion. I was excited to give them a try because: 1) I'm always on the look out for the best moisturizing lip balm and 2) my hands were super dry this winter - the skin was actually flaking right off!

I've been using Jess' Bee Natural Lip Balm and Shea Butter Lotion for just over 6 weeks now and am happily impressed. I'm also impressed that all of the ingredients used in Jess' Bee Natural products are pure and natural, chosen for their healing and moisturizing properties; they are produced in small batches and are hand poured to ensure their quality; and all of their 18 products scored in range from 0-1 in the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database.

Shea Butter Lotion

I started my testing by exfoliating my hands with some turbinado sugar and water to remove the dead skin, and while my hands were still moist with water, I applied the Shea Butter Lotion. Because the lotion is more of a salve or balm consistency, I found that applying the lotion to moist hands after washing really helps it absorb into my hands much better. The first few days I needed to apply the lotion after every hand washing – then after about a week the dry, peeling, flaking skin on my hands appeared healed and moist. Now I just apply twice a day, and my hands are soft - no flaky dry skin.

Natural Lip Balm

I had just run out of my current lip balm, so I was happy to get started on the three flavors of Jess' Bee Natural Lip Balm - Tangerine, Peppermint and Unscented. All three use the same simple, natural base of ingredients - sweet almond oil, beeswax, soybean oil, shea butter and vitamin E - which goes on smooth and softens fairly well. I use the unscented every night right before bed and it keeps my lips from drying out before morning. The tangerine offers a sweet, fresh scent that adds a little brightness to a winter day, but I think my favorite is the Peppermint. The Peppermint has a slight tingle when applied and a clean, cool scent which reminds me of minty toothpaste - I know this sounds weird but I really like it!

My Conclusions

Shea Butter Lotion - rating: * * * *

Although the Shea Butter Lotion isn't the typical creamy moisturizer that we have all been trained to expect, I really love the results I got from using it. The formula only includes sweet almond oil, raw shea butter, vitamin E - no water - which results in a balm-like lotion that creates a moisture barrier on the skin. On the same note, my only negative would be that when applied to dry hands it seems to sort of sit on the surface of your skin leaving a greasy layer. But its easy enough to just wet your hands right before applying, in order for it to work great. I would highly recommend this as a dry skin treatment. I rate the Shea butter lotion 4 out of 5 because it doesn't apply well to dry skin.

Natural Lip Balm - rating: * * * *

The Natural Lip Balm is a perfectly effective daily lip moisturizer. It applies easily and keeps lips hydrated for a worthy amount of time. I use lip balm many times a day, so I'm happy that it contains a short and simple list of safe ingredients. I rate the lip balm a 4 out of 5 stars because although it works well, I have used other lip balms that I like just as well.

Safe Cosmetics

Jess' Bee Natural is a signer of the Compact for Safe Cosmetics and are up-to-date on all requirements of a Full Member Status. This means that all of their products are free of the over 1,100 toxic ingredients banned from personal care products by the EU; they disclose all ingredients on product labels and on their website; they engage in at least one Campaign activity annually; and they comply with ingredient prohibitions and restrictions recommended or mandated by national health agencies overseeing cosmetics safety, including the U.S., Canada, the E.U. and Japan, as well as additional ingredient prohibitions and restrictions endorsed by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

The Story of Cosmetics with Annie Leonard

Please take a few minutes to watch the video below, The Story of Cosmetics, hosted by Annie Leonard, the creator of the viral video hit The Story of Stuff. This film was co-produced by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a national coalition of over 150 women’s, environmental and health organizations, and Free Range Studios. The Story of Cosmetics examines the pervasive use of toxic chemicals in our everyday personal care products, from lipstick to baby shampoo. (learn more)

Just as this video was being launched, we received good news. On July 21st, the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 (HR 5786) was introduced, which gives the Food and Drug Administration authority to ensure that personal care products are free of harmful ingredients. Existing law, passed in 1938, granted decision-making about ingredient safety to the cosmetics industry. For the first time in 70 years, Congress is poised to close the gaping holes in the outdated federal law that allows chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, learning disabilities and other illnesses in the products we use on our bodies every day. What's in your perfume? The Not So Sexy truth

June 03, 2010 | posted by ecomodish | 0 Comments

Categories: Health & Beauty    Tags: ,

Ever wonder what a "fragrance" is comprised of? As consumers, most of us trust that the products we buy contain safe ingredients. Why wouldn't they? But fragrance is considered a trade secret, which means your perfume could contain a blend of any number of 3,100 chemical ingredients used by the fragrance industry, AND the maker doesn't have to list any of them on their product label. So, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and Environmental Working Group joined forces to find out what secret ingredients are hiding in a variety of popular fragrances - and you don't want to miss these results.

Not So Sexy Fragrances

Independent Testing of Popular Fragrances

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics commissioned independent tests, and partnered with the Environmental Working Group to analyze the data and product labels, of 17 popular fragrance products. Among the tested fragrances were celebrity scents Jennifer Lopez J. Lo Glow, Britney Spears Curious, Halle by Halle Berry, and Hannah Montana Secret Celebrity.

What They Found

The analysis revealed that nearly half of the ingredients in the products tested were not listed individually on labels, due to the trade secrets loophole. These ingredients are allowed to hide under the vague ingredient "fragrance".

Among these are chemicals associated with hormone disruption, allergic reactions, and a propensity to accumulate in human tissues and even be passed on to newborn babies.

And, the analysis revealed that these products contained, on average:

  • 14 hidden chemicals not listed on labels due to a loophole in federal law that allows companies to claim fragrances as trade secrets.
  • 10 sensitizing chemicals associated with allergic reactions such as asthma, wheezing, headaches and contact dermatitis.
  • 4 hormone-disrupting chemicals linked to a range of health effects including sperm damage, thyroid disruption and cancer.

The Good News

There are companies out there that are committed to being open about their product ingredients and are dedicated to crafting safe, natural fragrances without all these harmful chemicals, including:

Pacifica - free of Parabens, Sulfates, Propylene Glycol, Phthalates, GMOs, Triclosan and Petro-chemicals. All are cruelty-free and 100% vegan. Shop Pacifica

ACORELLE - free of Phthalates, Petro-chemicals, Musks and other contaminants such as pesticides, chemical fertilizers and synthetic molecules. Shop ACORELLE

Lavanila - free of Parabens, Sulfates, Propylene Glycol, Phthalates, PEGs, Synthetic Fragrances and Petro-chemicals. Shop Lavanila

TSI-LA - free of Parabens, Sulfates, Propylene Glycol, Phthalates, GMOs, Petrochemicals, Dioxins and Synthetic Fragrances. Shop Tsi-La

How You Can Help

You don't have to settle for not knowing what harmful chemicals might be hidden in your fragrances. To find out more about this study and what you can do to protect yourself, your loved ones and future generations from unnecessary exposure to toxic chemicals in personal care products, visit
